The ports of the Mediterranean coast were indispensable to commerce and, from the very beginning of the Hellenistic period, underwent great development. In the Western diaspora Greek quickly became dominant in Jewish life and little sign remains of profound contact with Hebrew or Aramaic, the latter probably being the more prevalent. The Himalayas, the world's most elevated mountain range, form its southwestern borders with India, Nepal and Bhutan, and contain the highest peaks in the world. Located within the Himalayas is China's highest point, the famed Mt. Everest, which is also the tallest mountain in the world, and whose summit reac ft. ( m). Goa (/ ˈ ɡ oʊ ə / ()) is a state on the southwestern coast of India within the region known as the Konkan, and geographically separated from the Deccan highlands by the Western Ghats. It is surrounded by the Indian states of Maharashtra to the north and Karnataka to the east and south, with the Arabian Sea forming its western coast. It is India's smallest state by area and the fourth.   promontories. Sand drift on the eastern coast of India and its impact on major ports by T. Bhaskaran Download PDF EPUB FB2

Coastline of India (Indian Coastline) India has a coastline of Km touching 13 States and Union Territories (UTs). The straight and regular coastline of India is the result of faulting of the Gondwanaland during the Cretaceous period.

{Continental Drift} As such the coast of India does not offer many sites for good natural harbours. The Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea came into being. The extended coast of Visakhapatnam has undergone significant marine infrastructure development in the past three decades.

It is situated along East Coast of India and the coastline is oriented along SW–NE direction ().Major ports, fishing harbours, naval dockyard, shipyard, marinas and recreational beaches occupy the coastline and in the near future many more developments are Cited by: 8.

() for Oregon coast and Pandian et al., () for Ennore coast along east coast India. However, the present results are in contrast to the observations made by Mishra et al., (). Earlier works noticed the variation in littoral drift due to reversal wind pattern (Mishra et al.,Pradhan et al., ) and cyclonic conditions along the east coast of India.

On a seasonal basis, the wave height significantly varies while the wave direction is largely unidirectional, approach from south-southeast (Patra et al., ).Author: U.K. Pradhan, P. Mishra, P.K. Mohanty, U.S. Panda, M.V. Ramanamurthy. Gopalpur (19°18 ′13″ N: 84°57 ′ 52″ E), a seasonal port along east coast of India is under phases of development to an all weather open coast port and has a significant impact on the coast.

The East coast region is bounded by hilly terrain known Eastern Ghats (Saha et al. The west coast is a narrow strip of land ( km) sandwiched between the western Ghat and the Arabian. The results show that km ( %) of the coast is under erosion, km ( %) of the coast is getting accreted, while km ( %) of the coast is more or less stable in nature.

During Januarythe currents are towards west being away from the coast of Goa, whereas during June currents are in east direction, i.e.

towards the coast. Many studies have reported the impact of Ekman drift on the dynamics of marine debris. a sand spit growing in the eastern direction. The eastern zone which extends from 22 km east of the mouth of the Damietta to Port Said, and is characterized by slight erosion with minor and localized accretion areas (EL-Raey et al., ).

Developments of major/minor ports and fishery harbors consist of the construction of coastal. Naik and Kunte () studied the impact of ports structures on the shoreline of Karnataka considering one major port, NMP and other minor ports along the Karnataka coast by using shorelines extracted for the years, and The study indicates that gradual recession and accretion happened at Tadri, Bhatkal, Honnavar, etc.

Shoreline Changes and Near Shore Processes Along Ennore Coast, East Coast of South India Article (PDF Available) in Journal of Coastal Research (Jul ) January with Reads. Rameshwaram Island, the geological formation of coral atoll with a huge sand cover between India and Sri Lanka, plays a vital role in the exchange of littoral drift between the east and west coasts of India (Rao, ).

The Gulf of Mannar (GoM) receives sediment from the east-flowing rivers of the state of Tamil Nadu. Odisha on the eastern coast is the only state where the coast witnessed an expansion of more than 50%.

Moreover, 29 percent of the coastline also saw a gain in soil or land accretion. The survey used data from five satellites - Landsat 5 and 7 (operated by NASA), ISRO's Resourcesat 1.

Winds, water density, and tides all drive ocean currents. Coastal and sea floor features influence their location, direction, and speed. Earth’s rotation results in the Coriolis effect which also influences ocean currents.

Similar to a person trying to walk in a straight line across a spinning merry-go-round, winds and ocean waters get deflected from a straight line path as they travel. Ships set sail to Bali, Java and Sumatra from the ports of the east coast of India (Tripati, –) and on return they sailed directly to Sri Lanka then to other ports of India.

The merchants first went to Sri Lanka then to Southeast Asian countries and returned through the same route because of direction of flow of wind and currents. The Arabian Sea is a region of the northern Indian Ocean bounded on the north by Pakistan and Iran, on the west by the Gulf of Aden, Guardafui Channel and the Arabian Peninsula, on the southeast by the Laccadive Sea, on the southwest by the Somali Sea, and on the east by total area is 3, km 2 (1, sq mi) and its maximum depth is 4, meters (15, ft).

Suez Canal, Arabic Qanāt al-Suways, sea-level waterway running north-south across the Isthmus of Suez in Egypt to connect the Mediterranean and the Red seas. The canal separates the African continent from Asia, and it provides the shortest maritime route between Europe and the lands lying around the Indian and western Pacific oceans.

It is one of the world’s most heavily used shipping. The Indian Ocean is the third-largest of the world's oceanic divisions, cover, km 2 (27, sq mi) or % of the water on Earth's surface.

It is bounded by Asia to the north, Africa to the west and Australia to the east. To the south it is bounded by the Southern Ocean or Antarctica, depending on the definition in use. Along its core, the Indian Ocean has some large marginal.

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the world's five major oceans It is also known as the coldest of all the oceans. The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) recognizes it as an ocean, although some oceanographers call it the Arctic is sometimes classified as an estuary of the Atlantic Ocean, and it is also seen as the northernmost part of the all-encompassing.

In fact, cargo handling at all the ports is projected to grow at % p.a. till with minor ports growing at a faster rate of % compared to % for the major ports (IL&FS nd).Traffic. The littoral drift regime along the northeastern coast of India was investigated by analyzing coastal drift indicators and shoreline changes based on multitemporal satellite images.

The study of offshore turbidity patterns and quantitative estimation of suspended sediments was undertaken to understand the magnitude and direction of movement of sediment fluxes. The study revealed that: .Tuticorin coast has a major port and it is a rapidly developing area. The study area falls in the latitudinal and longitudinal extensions of 8?

40' - 8? 55' N and 78? 0' - 78? 15' E on the Tamil Nadu, East Coast of India .
